How the Pharisee Spirit Can Keep You From Praying In Tongues

Mar 15, 2026    Pastor Danney

How does the “Pharisee spirit” quench the gift of tongues in churches today?

In this sermon from Checotah Ministries, Pastor Danney explains how religious mindsets can slowly influence a church and begin to suppress the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Often this doesn’t happen through loud opposition. Instead, it starts quietly — through whispers, doubt, and subtle questioning of biblical doctrine. Over time, essential spiritual tools that God gave believers can be pushed aside.

One example is the gift of praying in tongues, which Scripture describes as a way believers communicate with God and build themselves up spiritually.

When believers reject or avoid this gift, they may unknowingly limit an important tool God intended to strengthen them in their spiritual walk.

📖 Bible References:

Acts 2:4 — The believers were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues.

1 Corinthians 14:2 — “Anyone who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God.”

Jude 1:20 — “Build yourselves up in your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit.”

1 Thessalonians 5:19 — “Do not quench the Spirit.”

This teaching encourages believers to remain discerning about the voices they allow to influence their faith and to remain open to the gifts God has given the Church.
